AWANA

What is AWANA?

AWANA is an international, Bible-centered children's and youth ministry whose goal is to reach children and their families with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him.  The acronym "AWANA" comes from the first letters of "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed," taken from 2 Timothy 2:15.

At Christ Memorial Church, AWANA is a spiritually challenging and fun time for children 4-years-old through 6th grade.

What happens on a typical AWANA night?
First the older groups gather for Opening (Cubbies go straight to the Cubbies' room).  Opening includes a time of singing and announcements.  Then schedules vary by club, but everyone has:

  • Gym time
  • Snack
  • A craft or shop project
  • A chance to share verses you've memorized during the week, and to work on more Bible memorization

At the end of the evening, the older clubs gather again for a gospel-centered skit.  Throughout each evening children are encouraged to come to know and love the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What time does AWANA meet?
Meetings are alternate Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.  Pizza for the entire family is available for a nominal fee beginning at 5:30 pm.

When's the next meeting?
The 2007-2008 AWANA dates are:  September 26, October 10, October 24, November 7, November 28, December 12, January 9, January 23, February 6, February 20, March 12, March 26, April 9, April 30, May 14, and May 28.  These can also be found on the church calendar.

What do I do first when I get to church on an AWANA night?
Get checked in.  Check-in is in the fellowship hall adjoining the sanctuary.  It's important that we know you're there - and besides, you'll earn money for the AWANA store just for coming.

How do I know what group I'm in?
Children are divided into "clubs" by grade.

The clubs are:

  • Cubbies: preschool (ages 4 & 5)
  • Sparks: K - 2nd (boys and girls together; meet by grade)
  • Boys
    • Pals - 3rd & 4th
    • Pioneers - 5th & 6th
  • Girls
    • Chums - 3rd & 4th
    • Guards - 5th & 6th

(NOTE: AWANA International has recently updated its curriculum to one called "Truth & Training".  At that time they dropped the club names.  Although we use the new curriculum, we've chosen to keep the club names from previous years.)

What should I wear to meetings?
Dress for fun - sneakers are best for gym time.  AWANA t-shirts can be purchased from any AWANA leader, but are not required.  On theme nights, you might come dressed as a clown or a construction worker - or with a crazy hairdo!

What's the AWANA store?
Twice a year, children get a chance to spend the AWANA bucks they've earned by memorizing verses, bringing guests, dressing for a theme night, or just coming to AWANA.  The store is set up in the gym, and has a wide variety of age-appropriate items for both boys and girls.

What other activities are there in AWANA?
Throughout the year, there are special events, like bonfires, campouts, lock-ins, and a Pinewood Derby.  These events will be listed on the
church calendar.

What does the Bible say about Sin, the Savior, and Saving Faith?  Check out this three-part Bible study!

And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.

For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling.

And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

    I Corinthians 2:1-5
